I had a Korean — and a language barrier — for a doctor about 20 years ago. My current doctor is an Indian — but from a Yank POV, his English is perfect, and perfectly comprehensible. When he goes home to visit his grandma, she excoriates him for his American accent.

The only problem I ever had with a foreign doctor wasn’t the accent. It was the cultural differences and attitude differences. I have had several try to talk to my husband instead of me. My answer always totally confused them. They’d say…“Your husband said…” and then I’d say, “Really? Is he having the procedure done? You need MY signature unless I’m unconscious!” In THIS country men aren’t “masters”.
