Gracie: The answer is 53! Classmate: Why do you have to be so smart? You'd be more popular if you acted normal. Gracie: I... Don't know... What to say. Classmate: Wow! You DON'T KNOW? I like you more already.
That’s a problem with many kids they try to play down their own intelligence so others are not embarassed and do not bully them. Girls do it often to make boys “like” them as well.
My daughter never let anyone intimidate her on showing her intelligence. She did choose to go for cheer leading (successfully) her senior year just to show her classmates she wasn’t just a nerd. (Nerd is a “title” she wore and wears proudly.)
I had this happen to me in school, but as the teacher who was trying to help pointed out: Just because you know doesn’t mean you have to show it by shoving it in everyone’s face. Besides, Gracie just might find if she lets the other kids take a shot at answering that her classmates are smart, too. Esp in the “figure it out” kind of way.

No body likes a smart aleck, yet there are other kinds of smart alecks no body likes.

My youngest daughter is in a similar situation, I told her not to worry she might be their boss one day.

It is always dumb people who are threatened by intelligence. I bet it is not that way in Asia.
