The disgrace is the VA. Most veterans see the VA as a last resort, not a first. I think it would be best to just put veterans on something like Medicade and abolish the VA system entirely selling it off to the private sector.

Ruff, all you have to do to qualify for veteran’s benefits is spend 90 + days in the military and get an honorable discharge. In fact, even those who served and got less than honorable but not a dishonorable discharge are eligible for some benefits. No war involved.

I’ve had good support from VA, and good medical care. I can also get in just as fast, or faster, to see a VA doc than my local “private sector” doc. Yes, their are problems, due mostly to under funding from Congress (note to Repbulicans) to keep up with both aging vets entering the system, and Iraq -Afghanistan folks.

If you want the real problem, check out what the old hats in the Pentagon, spending on their contractor friends, and cutting troops out of the loop, not VA.

Enoki: your solution is great for veterans! They can can go to the private sector, wait six years for treatment, and pay $87 apiece for aspirin if (note IF) they get admitted to a hospital.

You also have to serve at least 180 days on active duty first (that’s to disqualify NGs) unless your receive a service connected injury and disability, like in basic.

Also, if you do not have a service connected disability above 60% you have to pay copays, unless you’re non-service connected and have low-income, and you STILL will pay copays based on your income (like my niece’s husband does, Air Force, no service connected, but suffered a stroke. He DOES get VA hospital physical therapy, at no cost, but pays copays for his meds. They are low income folks.)
