That’s a mighty long line, for a class with about 10 people in it.

The interesting thing here is that Toni has her arm around Brad, while he sits there with his arms crossed.

Always an interesting relationship, that one.

Actually Brad and Toni are on duty on account of the annual ritual in which Pitt H.S. graduates pick up their diplomas and then go back and torch the school.

I’m surprised that no one here has been speculating on where this strip is going to go now that the kids have graduated and will be splitting up. It’s hard to see how the current cast can rationally be continued: Ms Phelps, Mr Fogarty, Leslie and Ox, and even Bernice, Delta, Rosa and Gunther will all be widely separated.

They may be interacting for the rest of the summer but come fall what will be the storyline?Follow Luann at MU with a new cast of characters?

Try to keep some semblance of interaction via technology?

Or after some 30 years of Luann will Greg just retire?

(It would seem to be an appropriate closing point)

My HS graduating class was about 155 students, which was almost exactly the same as the size of my freshman class at college a few months later. (None of the same folks, though.)

Apparently, Frank tried to take a picture of the graduation, and ended up with one of the iconic shots of the 1930 version of “All Quiet on the Western Front”.

I was hoping for better at Luann’s big moment, drat. IMO, Greg delivered one of his finest strips at Brad’s graduation on 5-28-99 (see above link).

I do feel we’ve turned High Schools into the mass production processes, thinking it will be less costly..But I do question the idea of more or bigger is better. That’s a lot of people to keep an eye on.

That seems to be a surprisingly large graduating class for the high school; and it’s being held in the athletic stadium (more fitting for a very large class, as, e.g., at a state university). But maybe it’s best that neither parents nor students can be sure who they are (or are not) looking at in the other group. I note that Quill is getting an American h.s. diploma, too….

Since in all these years we’ve seen exactly one teacher (and one guidance counselor, and one principal) at Pitt, and maybe a dozen students, it’s amazing to see all these other folks show up for graduation. Are there enough Weenie World franchises in town to employ all these people for the next 50 years?

“Class of…..oh, maybe 100.”*Lassie - wow! We had a big class the year I graduated- almost 40. And we were all high performers in our public school. At graduation, parents humiliated each one of us by jumping up and taking our picture as we marched in. :) (Thanks, Dad)

Greg retire from the strip? Few cartoonists get into it to retire from it. It’s a lifestyle, not a job. Now watch him pull a blockbuster move.

My grandson, “K,” graduated on June 1st. His dad got a crummy phone picture, but the local newspaper happened to pick him as one of a very few graduates to get his photo online while he was getting his handshake from the principal.

If they were hand-holding, their hands would be out of sight, behind the front spectators. We’d just see Brad and Toni’s arms looking like they’re joined at the hands. I guess Greg wanted to show their affection with a line-of-sight!

The reason I say her arm is around Brad is that the fingers on the inside of his left arm seem to be his own. Thus. Toni’s hand is on his back somewhere.

Equally telling is that Luann’s sister in law to be is acting as a good sister in law should and coming to a graduation that she herself isn’t technically involved in. Yet.

Maybe it is time to retire “Luann” and start a sequel strip featuring the other 490 Pitt H.S. graduating seniors whom we see for the first time ever, today. Actually, I expect that this is sort of what in fact will happen, when Lu’s current classmates start in at Mooney Uni and elsewhere, leaving our heroine to meet a whole new group of people at Pitt CC.

Every time I say: “I’m going, this year!”, I don’t!… Apart from some strips, and if there will be a Trek element this go ‘round, it’s usually just a bunch of “Hentai Bugs” floating around and crowding it up, anyway… the Convention Center in Baltimore is decent, but not as big as the one in Philly, LA, San Diego, even Detroit, I believe!
