I once wore a pair of mismatched socks to school. The kids teased me, til I told them it was ok, I have another pair at home just like them. (ok, I had to get the joke in somehow).

When in the navy I was issued a small mesh sock bag. Still use it. Camping equipment stores have them, and they are gentler than pins or clips.
