Id like to see a squirrel try that with the finches around my house. I’ve seen them attack in a set of at least 10 vs one blue jay, Finche’s don’t fool around.
Depending on the type of squirrel, they usually either live in nests in trees, or burrows in the ground. Both ways, they can line the den with leaves and other material to keep warm. Can’t see them feeling secure in those open, drafty birdhouses…
