When I was a child I had no worry about monsters under the bed. Mom inspected there from time to time. The only thing allowed under the bed was shoes (neatly lined up) and a select few oversized toys.It was my closet that was to cramped for a monster to live in…
I had no fear of my closet. Our closet, actually, as I shared the room with my older brother. Rather, I fantasized about the closet being a portal to other places. I hadn’t yet read Narnia- it was just a child’s imagination. I also imagined that, if you could fit through the cracks in the hardwood floor, you could arrive in another land. Frankly, I imagined all kinds of crossings to other places. Still trying to find one that really works.
I used to wonder why it was still called a bathroom even if there was no bathtub. But of course, I realized why. For the same reason that TV commercials once couldn’t say toilet, and had to say ‘bathroom bowl.’
@Thomas Scott Roberts* I never read “Where the Wild Things Are”. But that is a pretty cool looking closet monster. as a child, it was an ocean with nasty sea creatures surrounding the bed at night. The closet and under the bed were safe.
