They are looking more and more manic as time goes on. A few people have noticed that this change in their appearance (or at least Gruesome’s) started some weeks ago.
Looks like I was right about them going in through the side door (where the path seemed to lead), but it might be Einstein who dies in the fire while Gruesome doesn’t get burned. That would be a switch from Frankenstein.
GREAT STRIP with which to ’ kick off ’ the - New Year !Those ‘Expressions’, a close up, a pleasing visual contrast of Gruesome, and then a somewhat laid back Einstein in the 3rd.
A strip that’s easily a natural STANDOUT on any Newspaper comic strip page !
Neil’s commented on the morphing facial feature of Gruesome . . . A quick check suggests it became noticeable Sun, Nov.16, with Karloff’s features then, depicted in a more exaggerated, and caricatured form.Reasonable change ! Fits more rationally with the (original) strips, ‘facial / head’ styling
My only ‘question’ as this rolls on is . . .IF in the film – Gruesome - clearly died (as someone noted) How? can he be ‘around’ again ??
And today - my sincere Wish to EVERYONE - (Authors included), for yet another EXHILARATING year of - Dick Tracy !Hopefully, ‘characterized’ with civil, but stimulating observations and the occasional debate.
@ Sydney Phillips, after the return of B B Eyes who clearly died in the strip, not to mention the nine lives of Mumbles, It`s obviously another artistic license by the Authors. Or maybe the movies were in a different reality than the strip.
Yes, “Having Died” means nothing as the comment on BB Eyes and Mumbles (4th Edition) Indicate. Not only that, but in the old DT movie, Cueball got hit by a train but he was around last year to die again. No one apparently ever dies in this comic universe. It makes it easy to resurrect someone when stuck for new material.
Panel 3, and Einstein’s frenzied dialogue therein, suggests that Gruesome has already split! How far he will get, or if he can elude Tracy and Sam, remains to be seen. As for Einstein, if he doesn’t completely panic, he should be able to get out of the burning mill, but will probably be captured. Will he, then, sing like a birdie?
@SYDNEY PHILLIPSIF in the film – Gruesome – clearly died (as someone noted) How? can he be ‘around’ again ??
I think the note about Gruesome dying was a reference to the fact that Karloff’s character died in the windmill in the Frankenstein film. As for the Gruesome film, I take it to be in an alternate universe. I don’t think the present strip story was meant to be a continuity with the Dick Tracy vs. Gruesome film, just a story with a character loosely based on the character in the film.
Chester Gould never brought back a dead villain. Shoulders was presumed to die in a plane crash, but the body was not found. Mumbles was presumed to be lost at sea, but he was rescued by a passing yacht other than those two incidents, I can’t think of any character who was obviously dead, and then returned. The writers that followed Gould took more liberties with this. And, as far as outside movies, etc. they were never considered to be part of the official canon of the strip itself.

A captain should go down with his windmill. Then sideways, up, sideways the other way, down again, and so on.
