Artist are not empty. They are filled with ideas, and I am constantly surprised and amazed by my artistic friends who seem to create something that we can see, just based on something they’ve thought through.-Case in point: we had a sad episode here in Seminole County, Florida. One of the world’s tallest trees was destroyed when a junkie crawled into it and set it on fire.-The remaining wood (some of it burned) has been given to artists, and we are now about to have exhibits showing what they created from the ‘bones’ of the tree called ‘the Senator’ (it was donated to the County long ago by a Senator.)-A few of the artists sold some of their smaller works. I now own a tiny wooden bowl with a burn layer on it…

This overbearing fraud, Zébo, is an embarrassment to both academia and the art world. He is a clown, a self-absorbed poseur who is abusing his students. He’ll probably get top-rate student evaluations at the end of the term….

Zebo is a classic wanna-be. If he doesn’t have the talent to actually be an artist, he still can don all the pretension of a great artist, and teach art.

Once when I was substitute teaching in a small rural district, I had a Goth in a study hall. Thought I was in for a long class. He was loaded with studs and black leather. To my surprise, he took his corner of the class around him and said “We’re going to be quiet and work.” And they did. The whole class did the same.

A few years later, I read a story about a local boy killed as a Marine in Afghanistan. It mentioned the school district and that he always dressed as a Goth. I knew immediately who it was.

Most of us are presented many opportunities. But this was another one for me that I shouldn’t judge people by looks.

Even though the fellow behaves in an over-the-top fashion, I think the ideas he is suggesting have validity philosophically. In any artistic endeavor (be it traditional art, or science (which is artistic too) or another academic pursuit), you do need to have qualities of a) openness (to new ideas for instance), b) emptiness (a willingness to immerse or fill your mind/soul/etc. with the project), and c) fearlessness (a willingness to go against convention if needed or beneficial). So, I think that even though Zebo is a bit excessive in his manner, he is on track from a philosophical perspective on the practice of art.

By “empty” I think he means empty of pre-concieved notions. Nonetheless, I do hope Zebo will turn out to be a one-week wonder! If art is indeed the right path for someone in that class, I hope they’ll recognize that in spite of Zebo’s antics.

Actually, there is a fellow at my university who dresses and looks fairly similar to Zebo. In regards to there being three students in the class….. look at this past Monday’s edition of the comic…. Greg has silhouettes of other students visible behind our focused upon main three students. The silhouettes have simply moved out of the focal plane at the moment as we devote more attention to the antics of Professor Zebo while he directly interacts with the trio.

I don’t think he means empty as in devoid of thought, but empty as in open to all experiences — there is room inside to absorb as much of life as possible. A blank slate.

Ugh, this is very grating. I usually like Luann (except I objected when Brad and Toni encouraged Sharon to bite Ann Eiffel, and for some reason everybody here called me a troll?) But I honestly liked the Gunther storyline because it kind of made the point that you can’t always change even if you’d like too and that sometimes we grow up and actually get less appealing.

But this art teacher guy is sooo annoying. Insulting the students and bullying them and pouring water on them is never justified. And his points don’t even make sense – he hasn’t proved Luann is “open,” just that she allows herself to be bullied by having water poured on her. He hasn’t proved that Mr. Jock (and I assume he is just making up an insulting nickname, and that isn’t the guy’s real name) is Empty, just that he’s not brilliant. And he hasn’t proved that Mr. Goth is fearless, just that he thinks he is because he wears different clothing. Zebo’s treatment of his students seems more mocking than trying to expose them to new ideas.

Watching this pretentious fop insult, bully, mock, and physically abuse his students is just disgraceful, and I don’t know of a single community college that would approve of this behavior.

I suppose introducing new characters is okay, but so far they haven’t clicked. (with the exception of our Peruvian friends). And, where the heck are Knute and Crystal, and what are they doing? This is like a jigsaw puzzle where the messed up pieces don’t make any sense.

Just checking the Wikipedia page for the Luann Comic. We have some decisions to make:1) Are Luis & Sofia important enough characters to add? What if we don’t, and they come back in a year or two and we can’t remember them?2) Are the new classmates worth adding? That’s Bern’s new friends (I’ve already forgotten their names), Dez, and these two new ones. Plus Zebo— will they return or should they be put under “One time Characters”?
