This shows it is Gunther’s resentment of her… ‘having friends’ …that primarily drove Gunther’s desire to hurry back home. Though he really didn’t want to stay up in the mountain, he seems to have used that as his “cover” for the real reason for his return. He and his mom agreed to “grow”, but it looks like he’s “going back” on it (as far as letting her grow is concerned). Yeaaaah… Gunther is a “changed man” , alright…. – Perhaps someone (or something ) will come along to help him “readjust his focus”…

So the “Gunther goes to Peru” episode did nothing whatsoever to make him a stronger, more adventurous, more mature and confident person. Instead, he’s a whiney little boy who throws tantrums (and not shaving and wearing a sweatshirt are part of that). “My mommy’s dating a man! She’s not being my mommy full time, like a good mommy should be! WAAAAHHHH!!! Bad, bad mommy!”-Did Greg Evans really intend for the Peruvian misadventure to accomplish nothing? Does he want us to regard Gunther not just as a harmless wuss but now as a reprehensible jerk? If so, then mission accomplished!

If he had gotten much of his rebellion done a bit at a time earlier this would be less dramatic. Still, his mom seems to be relieved that they will each be able to enjoy a future adult relationship. I am with her; when no rebellion and no distancing happens neither does maturing. If he gets it done, no matter how awkwardly, then both he and she will be able to have more complete lives.

I’m disappointed that Mrs. Berger is willing to take the nasty tone that Gunther continues to use. I’d hoped to see her handing him a suitcase, and telling him to pack his bags for the dorm. Instead, she’s till packing him a lunch.-Even Quill seems uneasy with Gunther’s constant nastiness toward his mother. -And why would Gunther be heading for the food courts at campus? Didn’t he take off for Peru instead of heading for college? So why is he going to the campus now?-If he was accepted on a delayed admission, too bad no one showed us that. It would also be nice to know if he had a complete scholarship. That would mean his room and board might be covered and he wouldn’t have to live in his mother’s house anymore.-Otherwise, if Mom is paying his expenses AND saving a few dollars by packing his lunch, his ingratitude is as unacceptable as the rest of his ‘tude.-Between the so-called art teacher who dumped water on Luann’s head and Gunther the grump, I’m very disappointed in the direction this ’toon is headed. Looks like once these characters leave high school, they either turn into victims of bullies, or bullies themselves …

That’s pretty sad if she has to purposely annoy her son to get him to leave. It also goes against everything that’s been established about her character, but whatever.

    Tough love RB….. Tough love…

She may have had her own little Epiphany of sorts, and come to realize that this is what it will take to send him along the path to true “independence.”

And, perhaps with this little group of outbursts, Gunther will finally recognize what he’s doing (perhaps with a little help from the Q-Man), regret it, and realize that he has to go forth as well. At least he has some experience with that, now.

“You seem to imply that without the Peru trip, Gunther would have never learned that yelling and obsessing over his mom’s love life are wrong….” ^No, that’s not my intended “implication” at all… – I’m “implying” that Gunther was seeming to use his “exit stage left” from Peru to cover up the fact that he was making a “beeline” to “keep tabs on” his mom, as shown in his sentiment, expressed here: –

    – Thoroughout that two weeks (our time) of strips, this pattern seemed to “weave in and out” like a barracuda. He “toughed it out”, even going as far as "up the mountain. But it occurred to me, just why he said “45 days seems to be a long time”, more or less…. – – It’s because he realized that he could potentially be “cut off” from his mom, in regards to “keeping tabs” on her and “Mr. Gray”…

In case any friend of Karen’s is reading today’s postings, here’s a suggestion for a decent way out of this mess:-Quill meets Gunther for lunch and says something like this: “Listen, mate, my parents arranged for me to stay at your home because I thought it would be great to avoid dorm life and live with a family. But I feel like I’ve messed up your home life, because you’re embarrassed for an outsider to see how close you and your Mom are.”-“So I’ve been looking around, and I found a small apartment that my folks are willing to help pay for. But it would help if I had someone to share expenses.”-“So I’m moving out, and if you’re interested, there’s a room you can use. What do you say?”-Thus, exit Gunther from House Berger, stage right!

Gunther changed from a annoyed, embarrassed kid to a pissed off, embarrassed kid. It wasn’t a complete 180, it’s hardly a change at all and makes sense given that Gunther was on the verge of exploding at her even before Peru. Just sad because Gunther was supposed to grow up on this trip, not get worse.

I’m not sure how Gunther’s mom goes from being an overbearing mother to a…secretly not overbearing mother? At what point exactly did this ruse begin? Today? At New Year’s? When Quill moved in for the first time?

    All, your opinion, of course.

I’d like to think Gunther still has a chance to make it right. We are all at Greg’s mercy right now. I have no idea what he wants. So I’m not going to speculate.

Gunther’s had a tough road in life. I believe he is worthy of salvation, especially if, in the end, he is destined for Lu. He’s not ready for her at this point. He does have some issues to resolve.

Let’s give him a chance to do that.

Mr Gray? Mr.Gray? What the hell! Don’t you think it’s time that Mom started calling him by his first name? What the hell is this – the 1950’s? The entire story is ludicrous. The skips in logic and time are absurd (gunthies in college suddenly). The characters are so one dimensional and the stories so simple and poorly thought out.

It appears that this the difference between a syndicated comic that just gets printed regardless of quality and a webcomic that requires buy-in and reader support.

You may ask ‘why then you you come here and read it?’ For the same reason I read movie reviews of the crappiest movies – they can be entertaining.

Does Mooney offer the first semester of its courses in the second semester as well? Most “major” colleges have year-long courses that start in the fall, and if you miss the first semester, you have to wait until next year to take them. It’s come-and-go colleges like Pitt CC that offer most of the same courses every semester,

Gunther has likely been snappy to his Mom all his life. It’s the way that whiney little pampered kids behave – like privileged, snotty brats. Gunther hasn’t grown up, and being away from home in Peru (which was supposed to allow him to grow as a person) failed completely as a learning experience, since he’s just as immature as ever.

I must be confused to how he’s telling her he wants to be treated as an adult. All I’m seeing is him being rude and disrespectful to the woman who raised him and puts a roof over his head and food in his stomach. He obviously had the money to go to Peru and stay in a nice hotel. Plus with that last paycheck maybe Gunther should just move out.

If Gunther felt that “I’m my own man now!” as a result of living in a luxury hotel in Peru, then why is returning to the USA to keep his Mom away from Mr. Gary such a driving motivation in his life? He’s not his own man, he’s still mama’s little boy, and he doesn’t want any Mr. Gray coming between them.

Are you saying that Gunther didn’t whine at his mom, didn’t tell her to stop calling him Gunthie, etc. BEFORE he went to Peru? It’s not really an opinion, these are all things that happened. He just wasn’t as mean about it as he is now.

No, I’m simply saying that your “projections” of what’s causing all this behavior on his part are your own opinion. I choose to see his actions as having different origins. We are both entitled to our beliefs. And since you feel free to project, so will I.

Gunther has food, shelter, clothes, enough money for his hobbies, enough money for college, and most importantly, a mom who loves him.

He may have all those things, but it doesn’t help much if his parent’s don’t have the right parenting skills… and Gunther has been one parent down from the beginning. And I disagree that he’s had enough money for college, especially considering that I think he was given almost a full ride to Moony, IIRC. Maybe he does have it now, given his “final paycheck” from “Uncle Leo.” But it really doesn’t matter. Tiffany had both parents and absolutely no financial worries… but still, we see how she turned out.

Ms. B, does, indeed, love her son… but sometimes love means knowing how to let your child “mature” and when to “let go,” and preparing the child for that eventual day. I tend to think that Gunther has been sheltered a bit too much. Milk & cookies do not solve all problems or prepare one for the real world. And now, he has to learn it on his own. He’s frustrated. He’s losing his “old normal” (i.e. the advent of Mr. Gray), and he’s totally insecure about what his “new normal” should/is going to be. And he blames his mother for that. In his eyes, she smothered him, rather than mothered him. And he’s pi$$ed about that on a couple of levels… Perhaps unjustly, but he’s still frustrated. I honestly think Mr. Gray is more the “excuse” than the underlying cause of his behavior

Let’s not insult the people out there who’ve actually had a hard life.

No more than your insult that he hasn’t. Not everyone gets to lead that “Ozzie & Harriet / Father Knows best” picket fence life. Gunther certainly has not.

We have plenty of people who post on GoComics and complain that their mothers didn’t spend time feeding them, buying them clothes and otherwise waiting on them hand and foot.-Now we’ve got a mother who works outside the home, but always has meals ready for her son. And even thinks ahead to make up a casserole when she’s going on a date.-And you say she’s ‘smothering’ him…-I guess it’s true. No matter what a mother does, it’s always wrong. Until your mother has passed away and then you realize what you’ve lost…

But he isn’t saying it, he’s shouting and screaming it. When kids have tantrums, parents don’t listen to words. They listen to tone of voice, and that’s what they react to. If Gunther wanted to be treated as a man, he’d act like a man and not a spoiled brat.

Wow. I’m all conflicted. I was glad to be done with “interesting” Prof. Zebo, and Goth(really Emo Lite), and Jock (really Scruffy Strong Guy Who’s Supposed to be Thick as a Brick), and Young Lady(open-minded, polite Luann). Now, I’m sorry Gunther is back, crabbier than ever… It’s painful to observe. I do hope that he comes to terms with things- his mother’s going out with Mr. Gray. In today’s strip she handled that pretty functionally. “I’m doing this, deal with it, but dinner’s in the fridge…” That “Lunch for Gunthie and Quillie”, though… Sigh…I’m kind of in between everyone, as far as opinions about Gunther and his mother. I’m trying to take into account that he seems to be socially awkward and shy in certain areas. I’m not expecting him to act like an adult- he is in transition. Mom has kinda spoiled/pampered/ clung to/ held him back in some ways, while loving, caring for, and encouraging him also. I have to really give her credit, although a lot of how this is depicted in the strip makes me cringe. I’m expecting him to act like a high school guy, not a college guy.. He’s not in college yet. He got himself thrown into an adult work scenario – impromptu IT Guy at a Peruvian Rich People Plastic Surgery Clinic…Seemed to do well professionally, but not socially. Now, by way of Telanovela Quality (not an insult) plot line, he’s gone from The Girl( tell Uncle there will be no returning- now that’s quite a line from Rosa), supposedly The Big Adventure, back to home- as Jealous Mama’s Boy. Like he’s following a script to a film I might not WANT to watch, but I CAN’T look away!!!! Help…I do want the Gunther as Jealous Son Arc resolved… Hope Quillie stops being all bemused and a bit smirky about the situation, and actually sets Gunther straight. Or, Mom introduces Mr. Gray to Gunther, and Mr. Gray is courteous as he should be…Wait, I’m dreaming here, aren’t I?? Thank you all for indulging me this rant.

Hmmm… Quill does look as if he may say something to Gunther. His expression in the last panel doesn’t look bemused or smirky, but a low level of taken aback and concerned- Quill dude style.

Are we to assume that Gunther is now enrolled at Mooney Uni, along with Quill, Bernice, and Tiffany? Will Luann now get fed up with Prof. Zebo’s blither at Pitt CC and use that as justification for transferring to Mooney also? (Never mind that she was at best an average student in high school, and her grades no doubt prove it.) So the gang will all be together just as they were in Mr. Fogarty’s class (every subject, every year), and the whole “aging” change to the strip will have had no effect except to remove Delta and Rosa (the two minorities) from the gang. (I presume Crystal and Knute aren’t students at Mooney, but they will probably hang out there anyway, since they seem to have no place else to go.)

Thebigboot, your mother is awesome and thoughtful . That’s ok. Even if you roll your eyes inwardly a little bit at what she does, the doting she does, and your response to it seems healthy and sweet. What is being portrayed in the strip between Mom Berger and Gunther needs some serious adjustment. Which I hope happens soon.

Although I like Ma Berger’s assertiveness about dinner with Mr. Gray. She did that well. Also, she is dressing a bit more polished… A bit, I said. I’m mildly hopeful for better things to come. Mildly. :)

“Now he can say it, his mother just isn’t listening.” ^Oh, she hears it, but she just can’t stop fast enough for Gunther’s delight… – Funny, seeing as how she has decided to “keep friends” and “grow”, and that change doesn’t sit well with Gunther, even more so….

    Hmm….. –

    – Seems that “mom’s touch” was good enough to help him during the prom in May of 2013 (of our time). And also notice that when Gunther doesn’t try too hard, things seem to just “fall in place”. Perhaps he is also contributing to his own feelings/attitude right now, because of this(trying too hard), since “when you point a finger, you always have 3 pointing back at you, as well”….

For a single mother, I think she’s done an excellent job. I’m not sure what else she was supposed to do?.

Teach him how to deal with others and to assert himself. Advise him properly on how to approach his social interactions with his fellow classmates. Expose him to situations that will allow him to mature… to fall. and to rise again… and to show him that he can do all that, gain confidence in himself, without killing himself. Provide meaningful guidance on how to deal with the Les Konx’es of the world, as well as the Rosa’s. Yes, Ms. B fulfilled her obligation as a parent (remember, Gunther never asked to be born – he didn’t have a choice in the matter). It’s the parent that goes “above and beyond” that obligation… that prepares their child to face the world yet to come… and encourages them to go for it as an independent and mature adult.

In short, be that “cheetah” mother I mentioned.

She let him go 6 months ago…she actually encouraged him to go…

But she did nothing that we’ve seen to help him prepare for it. She could have done things like send him to summer (sleep away) camp, or join the Boy Scouts, or similar experiences. It’s almost like throwing him in the deep end of a pool with no lessons and saying “Sink or swim.” For all I’ve seen so far, she’s been the perfect “helicopter parent.” That’s not the best solution, either.

And yet he comes home, lives under her roof, eats her food, and gets pissy about her love life. Are you saying he perceives himself to be smothered, so he’s going to smother her even worse?

No, and we don’t know how long he’s been home nor how long he will stay. I can see him easily leaving the nest at some point during this next week or so. We have to wait and see what happens. And again, his attitude in re: Mr. Gray I think is just the “surface excuse.” There are some greater underlying issues going on there.

Gunther really should just move out if he’s so angry at her. He needs to get a place on campus, make some friends, and stop thinking about his mom and the guy she’s dating.

I actually agree with this. And, hopefully, he has a little cash from “Uncle Leo” to do just that. Furthermore, I hope that Quill decides to go with him. Q can be a rather positive influence on Gunther, “by example.”

So sorry for your loss. That’s actually close to the way we lost our Step-Dad, although he survived the fall. But he never regained consciousness, and it fell to my brother to be the one to turn off machines, since he was local. Even though those were Dad’s wishes, I don’t think I could have done it-We lost our Mom to a terrible cancer caused by asbestos. In her last months, it was our Step Dad who kept her going; she called me to say good by the night before she passed away. It was years ago, and feels like just yesterday….

All this Gunther stuff is IMO getting a bit tiresome. Sorry. .Also the colleges are neither very interesting in terms of human relationships. Seems they ought to be..I’d like to see new characters, or even some brought back. .Luann and Quill need some romantic complications — other would-be boyfriends or girlfriends..Les Konx, Elwood Druit, Bernice’s brother, the pool (married) manager, the guy in the wheelchair, Jonah, could show up. I’d even take even Dirk (!) or Aaron (??)..Anyhow, we seem promised Dez..Tiffany needs a boyfriend. Cristal might be at Pitts (let’s get her together with Goth, though he seems a dull one.) .Even Knute could be developed. He had cartooning, skateboarding, and other odd talents. He could come into that art class — give " the Prof. " a run for his money.

Hasn’t it been established that Gunther doesn’t have a car? That started one of Rosa’s complaints about him planning too much instead of just doing. I would assume he has a license though, since he said he was going to get a car and there was no mention of a license one way or the other. Unless he borrowed his mothers car, somebody had to drive him to all those places mentioned, or he took a bus.

What’s happening here? The humor is missing and has been replaced with a serious probing of Gunther’s psyche. Even last week’s “Professor” Bozo was just weird slapstick. The mystery of Dez was left hanging, Mr. Gray is bland. and Tiffany, Crystal, and Knute only make cameo appearances. I need humor…………Puddles, where are you?

Funny how so many of you think that Quill should have spoken up to Gunther from the beginning. As a guest in someone’s home he did the polite move of staying out of it. Yes, now that it has gone on for way too long and has escalated it is time for him to say something.

I suppose Gunther wishes he could just start from the beginning Again… However, there are a lot of words between “hello and good-bye”. I’ve been off-line for several days and I know I’ve missed a LOT of posts; however, I just don’t have the time to read all of them. Give Gunther a LLLLLOOOOOTTTTTTTTT of space…and me, too. I’ll be catching up… Even though Gunther has turned into a bit of a pain, I kind of like him …for now. Gunther IS acting like a spoilt brat. Nothing like going from one place to another in the blink of an eye. I hope things will continue to spin! Have to say ’Nite all until next…! ;)

It’s obvious what Quill thinks. But Gunther believes the opposite.-It is unbelievable to me that a kid can think a parent is supposed to always be the same. People change. Experience changes them. Age changes them. -I think the only solution to the Gunther versus Mrs. Berger issue is for Gunther to move out. When he is truly on his own (and not living in a plush hotel paid for by Rosa’s uncle), he will realize how much he depended on his mother to keep his life in operating order….

This is ridiculous. I can’t believe a lot of you are saying harsh judgements or throwing shade on you. Let Gunther have some space to grow and work on his own faults. Gunther shouldn’t have talked to her like that yet I understand how annoying it can be to get parented by your mother while you’re an adult. I would be annoyed too.
