What sort of reward WAS John expecting form Michael aside from gratitude?

If a kid says something his parent did was neat or cool the parent should consider themselves thanked well.

My grandchildren are usually pretty good about their please and thank you. If they forget, I stand there with my hand behind my ear til they notice and remember.

What more is there to say? A simple “thank you” seems appropriate. Do they want a parade, sash, and a crown for doing favors in that family?

Lots of men want parades for doing the dishes and vaccuuming, yes.
