Joan: When we first got married, Wally didn't want to discipline Max at all.
He didn't want to be the bad guy.
Joan: But you can't live with kids and not say NO now and then.
Wally: You mean every day.
Val: Or in Max's case, every HOUR.
But what I remember from the older strips, it was Joan who couldn’t say no to Max. She was full of ideas like, give him more options, don’t restrict him, blah blah blah. It was Wally who finally got her to understand she has to set boundaries for Max (and enforce the rules).
Yes that is correct. He went to get milk and never came back. He cleaned out their bank account and ran to some island. With no money, Joan and Max went to live at Val’s house. After Joan was involved with Wally he came back for a few days until Wally told him to leave for good. And to Hekko: thanks for reminding me that Joan was a complete idiot with Max letting him do whatever he wanted. Didn’t want to squash his creativity Joan would say as he was destroying Val’s house.
dbsw: you really should go back & read from the beginning!I’ve been doing that, and you get all the history & laughs & tears. I didn’t know about Stone soup until last year, love it!

dbsw, Joan’s first husband turned out to be a jerk, walked out when she told him she was pregnant. Val’s husband died of illness.
