Had that happen at work: told a new employee, “We;come to the family – some days it’s the Osmonds, other days it’s the [Ozzy] Osbournes.” She looked at me and asked, “What’s an Osmond?” I went into a corner and drowned my age in a quart of MetaMucil.

GorgoloChick: Or more precisely, you write lyrics and compose music.

I work full time, exercise slightly less than Frazz, and have time left to play my musical instrument about once a week. Just saying the songwriting thing stretches credence.

Streaming stations pay for the songs they play, radios (in America) don’t. Radios everywhere else do, and rather a lot. The exact method of payment to various artists is, as noted above, fairly insane… its part of why bands like the Dead just relied on touring, because that was really where the money was (and the ability to follow it, at that.)

Oh, and songwriters sometimes get paid in situations where the performers don’t, but they still get a lot less at the end of the day!

Ewal Doh: So it was claimed in the lyrics, but as bigpuma pointed out, he didn’t write that one. As Dorothy Hammerstein would point out, Jerome Kern didn’t write Old Man River, but dah dah dadah, while her husband wrote Old Man River.
