If nobody will pay good money for your thoughts, you probably should have learned a trade.

Question of the day:Q. Should I invest in my retirement fund or a college fund for my kids?A. Invest in your retirement.Reason: You can get education loans, but just try to go to the bank and get a retirement loan!!

Jim Cramer often makes that point about putting away money for the kids’ college as opposed to funding retirement plans. He advises to focus on building assets in retirement accounts for just that reason. There are more alternative sources of funds for college.

A dollar won’t buy as much now as a penny did when that saying was invented.

I recall a Wizard of Id from many years ago:

Bung: A penny for your thoughts?Duke: “A fool and his money are soon parted.”Bung: That’s not bad— here’s your penny.

Thoughts are not a very good deal for the one giving them. Its only a penny for your thoughts, yet you give your 2 cents worth. So in total, you lose a penny by giving your thoughts.
