A massive bush fire has been raging in the Cape since about 18:30 last night in the Noordhoek area. That is the saddest part about living in the Cape Province; it is prone to bush fires in the summer. The strong winds and the dry summer weather fan the flames. Sadly these fires are sometimes started by careless people and sometimes by arsonists.

I have just been reading further. The first fire started in Muizenberg on Sunday but was contained. Then the second fire started in the early hours of Monday morning and is still spreading. It sounds as if this is one of the worst fires they have ever had. :(

Over 3,000 hectares of forest land has been burnt; authorities have just announced that it will take days before all the fires have been extinguished. The fire has apparently been contained and fire-fighters from the Orange Free State, the Northern Cape and the Eastern Cape have been deployed to assist.

We are plagued with brush and forest fires here in Arizona in the hot summer months as well. They are terrifying. Thousands of acres are burned every year.

We have a network of horse owners that stand by in case of a fire. When there is a fire, people in the path of the fire call the regional leader and a telephone network calls volunteers who bring horse trailers and trailer out any livestock that is in the path of an oncoming fire. It has saved many animals.
