The only way for me to solve the Rubik’s Cube was to buy to book and follow the instructions, or take it apart and put back together. Both ways were unsatisfactory.

Actually, I got quite a bit of satisfaction out of being able to take a Rubik’s cube apart and reassemble it. These days, I can do it with other things: dishwashers, clocks, cars. Usually, they work again afterwards…always a bonus!

I tried to peel the stickers from mine rather than taking it apart. When I finally had it ‘solved’, I never let anyone else touch it. What does that tell you about me, I wonder?

I had to read a book to solve my first Rubik’s Cube. However, some of the basic strategies that I got from that book, I have applied to many other puzzles in my life – including real-world puzzles, not just toys.So my most educational toy was not the cube, but that book.

My brother used to be able to solve the Rubik’s Cube while I couldn’t. One day I took it apart and put it back together into an unsolvable configuration before giving it to him to solve. Eventually he figured out what I’d done, but not before a bit of puzzlement.

My sister and I never played Mouse Trap. We just set up the trap and put it in motion. And when that got old, we took it apart and used the individual pieces in new ways, like with LEGO.

No joke here, chess taught me how useful some understanding of Psychology can be.
