Once again, God has to pick the black olives off the pizza. Can’t they ever get the order right?

Not being trusted with weapons; the rifle drill team had to make due with hats.

A somewhat enlarged image can be found at the only work, by this artist (Google translated), so far, to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog (yesterday). Again, it is a slightly cropped image, this time of a different coloration, less cropped image found here.Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich Visiting the Camp of the Finland Regiment of Imperial Guards on July 8, 1837 (links show Google translated Russian Wikipedia pages) isn’t, as far as I can tell, currently shown online by its current-location.An enlarged (perhaps) full image of it can be found here (Bing translated). This adds some history (song it mentions). It reminds me of the hat tossing done by graduating cadets at the U.S. military academies, except, unlike the tossers in the painting probably had to, the cadets don’t recover them.I wonder why some of them have white pants, like the Duke. I also wonder who the boy (about halfway between the Duke and the right-edge) was.The Duke’s translated Wikipedia page says he only fathered daughters (even out of wedlock); but, given the decorations on the boy’s sleeve, I would guess he was royalty (perhaps a nephew). The artist’s Wikipedia page (Google translated Russian Wikipedia page has more) and collection (more under Subcategories).First work, by this artist, to be used here.
