@leftwing—-I think the “right” way to spell it is “write”.

Sort of a Veblen world. Wherein a man’s repute in the community is measured by the resources he can afford to waste.

@LX013: That’s OK. Reading comic strips is hard work.

Old Texan  almost 9 years ago

I grew up in rural Texas and Arkansas in the 40s and 50s. My Dad was a disbled WWII Vet. His government pension was 40 dollars a month. With 4 brothers and 2 sisters there weren’t many bought toys.

I’m not jealous of you guys who had those things. I actually feel kind of sorry for you. We built forts. We dug caves. We made our toy guns out of sticks. I found a piece of pipe with and elbow attached. Finest gun I ever owned, it never failed me and got me out of a lot of predicaments with the bad guys.

I knew where the cave where the panther that lived on the mountain had her kittens every 2 years. Our meadow was the only clearing for miles around, she would bring her kittens to play, while she laid under an oak and watched. Usually with me sitting and watching, also. I knew where the springs were that had the coldest water on a hot summer day.

Dad taught me the safe way to build and fire a carbide cannon. They were made out of baking powder cans or old paint cans. Now he would be arrested for allowing his kids to possible get hurt. Some of my friends got burned, but they sure knew what to not do next time.

I used to think the rich kids had all the nice stuff and us poor kids didn’t have anything. It took me many years to realise that that was just backwards.

@LX013: I’ve been noticing that your English is a lot better than 4 or 5 years ago when I first “met” you. Like most things in life, it isn’t necessary for it to be perfect.

@neverenoughgold: If you want to test your slinky on the escalator at the mall, bring someone with you who is wearing something slinky. That way, nobody will pay any attention to yours.

Alternatively, you could just go to YouTube and type in “Slinky on escalator”

I found someone slinky the other day and ended up getting slapped… by my wife!

Yes, I do go to the tube occasionally for a laugh. The biggest problem with stuff you see on YouTube or other places on the net, is you just never know if what you are seeing is real or fake; like a really slinky woman for example!

Besides, sometimes there is no fun in just watching; I’m more of a doing type guy…

I find if I want something new, and don’t act on the impulse right away, the new thing isn’t new anymore and I move on to the next new thing!

This cycle can repeat itself indefinitely…
