I did not mean to ascribe the statement of Jesus as a commentary on either the beggar or the businessman as a successful individual. The intended relation is to the businessman’s utterance. And, yes, it is a soft rebuke to the businessman’s attitude. Paul’s statement is a rebuke to the beggar’s attitude.

He said that as an unfortunate truth, but the “Christian” Right has turned it into a mission statement.
