    Good morning Marg

Whew……..OK……..so………I wonder what today will bring……..

(I guess Calvin is now wondering the same thing….)

Thanks to everyone for helping to make this great community even better yesterday. Life is so much better if we can focus on the pleasure of sharing it with others, if we can put our energy into encouraging others, and if we can learn to disagree with respect, kindness, and humor.

Dad be careful ! You are about to hit a Ice Goon ! It may be a good thing if you manage to break a few of the goons down, but not if you break your head !

And Dad, chaining Calvin in bed will not do the trick unless you keep his transmorgifier out of reach. Calvin can change himself into something slimy and get out of it.

Dad’s eyes are already popping out so far he needs his extra hands to catch them and put them back in place.

I’m going to say this as kind and respectful as I can. I know I’m going to ‘catch it’ for this, too. But, “Hobbes”, why bring up the past to give us all a warm and fuzzy message? Wasn’t yesterday enough for you? When done in small doses, kind, sincere words can be refreshing. But when piled on day after day, the lectures and pastoral type messages are just too much. Yes, it’s all good stuff, and you live for the plaudits. But PLEASE, give it a rest. OK, bring it. I know you have your faithful followers who just live for another warm and fuzzy message from you about the wonderful and sublime things of life, and how the world would be such a better place if we would all just try to see things the way you do. I do believe this will be the last time I’ll read the comments (other than Marg), and I’m going to miss some of the short, cute and humorous ones that some post. But having to skip past all of yours is more than I care to do. I can see you and Rodney King sitting together holding hands and saying “Can’t we all just get along?” Weep weep. Sorry, I came here to laugh, and I’m tired of you trying to bring me down with your pious, self-serving, “insightful” (?) comments. I’m done. Have a nice day. :)

I’m sorry to read your comment, rogue53. We are all different, and none of us can please everyone. And as I said before, since we are unable to meet in person, it is often very difficult for us to understand each other’s motives.

There are people in this world who genuinely enjoy doing things for others, and who do not do it for self-serving reasons. There are also people in this world who are totally baffled by them and do not understand their motives.

None of us is perfect, and whenever we are thanked for helping others, we must always strive to accept it with humility. If our purpose in helping others is to feel good about ourselves and we are not doing it because we care about them, then in that case you would be correct and it would be self-serving.

The true test of our sincerity is how often we do things for others anonymously, in a way that no one will ever find out. Many people do this every day, but we never meet them because they are……..well…….anonymous.

Since you do enjoy humor, I hope that you will find a community that focuses only on that, which you can enjoy. Thanks for letting us know your feelings, rather than just disappearing.

Come on folks! This is a f……g cartoon which, delightfully, brings up memories and sympathies of the past, quite often our own. The reasons we read it are unimportant, but it is interesting to see what others have to say; I appreciate the pontifications of some, others I find a little self-serving, but all in all it’s a great group we have here, and so far s I’m concerned anyone who doesn’t abuse the rest of us can say whatever they feel like saying. Sometimes I get to see refreshing and novel viewpoints, and other times I see very narrow interpretations. It’s what our society is all about; let it be. Should I say “amen” after this?

Good morning all. I read all your comments on my behalf, and for someone who asked, I only sadly speak one language English not the proper big words some might speak, I wished I had learned a bilingual back from HS, this will give my age away but it’s been over 35 years since HS. None of my family speak bilingual so I would lose that ability. I wish to move on enough has been said and I don’t intend to let very complimentary comments go to my head. I didn’t get on late last night to thank everyone for what you all said. Let’s just on with the wonderful comments about the strip as I said previously your comments are at times more funnier then the strip. For the creator I wish could see what all you have written about his strip of Calvin. Now Calvin you found out water will freeze on snow how do you not fall down yourself. I will need to get back to class for study. Had a pretest did so-so.

Calvin doesn’t slip (or slip as much) because he’s much lighter than dad per the surface area of his shoes. The more weight, the more pressure on the surface of the ice and the quicker it converts momentarily to a thin layer of liquid under the shoes. This is what makes ice skates work so well! All the weight/pressure of the human body is concentrated on a thin blade which reduces the frictional surface area and exponentially increases the pressure per square inch, liquefying the ice directly underneath for an instant.

I remember walking up a slight incline that was very icy and I, at 250 lbs could walk up it with ease but my friend who was a few inches taller and 375 lbs just could not get his shoes to grip and I had to help him the entire way. We had fundamentally the same kind of shoes.

Why are people so serious at times - this is after all only a comic strip ( albeit a very good and funny one ) and although I don’t post very often I never miss a day without looking to see what “our lad” is doing. Hobbes words are truly inspiring and if rogue23 is really so bothered I doubt he will be missed by the many happy folk on this forum and hope he can find another forum more suited to his way of looking at things.

Actually Dale, there are special faucets for areas that freeze over. The actual faucet is buried underground below the freeze line, and a long rod pokes up above ground to the spigot. Works lie a charm.

Of course, you still have to drain the water in the hose. If you don’t, it will freeze solid.

According to Wikipedia, the names were never revealed. Watterson has never given Calvin’s parents names “because as far as the strip is concerned, they are important only as Calvin’s mom and dad.”

I have been working on studies, I have to retype a text and use subject/verb. I’m surprise to how much I missed out on as a young child and never really used as an adult. Had a variation from technical college from Business English. At my present job I don’t really use too much. As I don’t write letters. Bye for now I don’t know if I will be on later.

As a father, I can certainly sympathize with “Dad”. There are times that I can get annoyed by the unpredictable behavior of my little “Calvin.” However, parents make comments to their partners that are never intended to be heard by their little “Calvin’s”. I think this is just Calvin’s parents letting off a little steam with the joke about chaining Calvin to the bed.

As for the practicality of using a hose in the winter - anything’s possible in the comic strip world.

Mythreesons, I used to change my avatar a lot until I hit on this one which fits my personality completely. When I did change them often times your personal photos could be to large for gocomic’s capacities, so try reducing the size. Most of the time though I would find an image on the internet and drag it onto my desktop and access it that way by going to your profile and following directions. Good luck. I have a Mac so my method my not work for a PC.

One year we had had a winter thaw and refreeze in the backyard and a good 20 feet by 20 feet turned into ice. About a quarter of a mile from home the town used to flood the locale basketball court so we could go skating every winter. I would iceskate with my Dad or my friends every winter. Anyway since the backyard was all ice I decided to strap on my skates and I had my own private skating rink for myself and my friends. After it melted I called the neighbor kids and we took buckets of water and flooded the backyard and it turned out great. From then on we did it every winter and had a blast!

What I like about the C&H comments community is it, like the old Pibgorn community, is such a varied group of individuals from such diverse backgrounds. Comments are based upon the C&H toon of the day but like any gathering of diverse individuals the conversation can stray into any direction. Some of these new directions are fascinating, some are not of interest to me but this just reflects the group dynamics and is an indication of the individuality of the members of the community. I do not post very often but I enjoy reading the posts about C&H as well as other areas that are of interest to and impact the lives of the C&H community.

“… BTW, what kind of music?”

It depends on my mood but I enjoy literally most styles of music, except I just have not developed a fondness for opera, rap or hip-hop. For me music is all about the emotional response it elicits through tone, timing, instruments and words. I don’t care for songs that promote violence and hatred, like most of the rap and hip-hop I’ve heard, yet I enjoy reggae songs that deal with oppression, in a nonviolent way. I’ll add though that there are songs I do not particularly enjoy in styles of music I say I like and visa versa. I try to keep an open mind when it comes to music.

Most folks in areas that get cold have “sill cocks”, faucets that drain automatically rather than leave water in the faucet. A frozen faucet will most likely burst when it comes time to thaw. and people get tired of replacing them … but the hose is right. If it wasn’t drained, and was left attached to the faucet, then there’s be a bit of a problem, but SO WHAT? That has little to do with the story. We have to assume that it worked, and then enjoy the fun.
