Farley is not exactly in charge of his own destiny here. He doesn’t feed himself junk or leftovers and if he doesn’t get enough exercise that is also not his fault. Clearly Elly is lecturing herself and not the dog.

Ah, the mom diet. Your own portions may well be sensible and reasonable. But as you put dinner away, you can’t stand throwing away the perfectly good food your kids didn’t even touch on their plates. So you finish those two chicken nuggets. And three bites of mashed potatoes. And then there is only a quarter cup of peas left in the serving bowl, so you eat those quick, too, because that little bit isn’t work putting in tupperware in the fridge…. Next thing you know, 15 lbs.

At least, according to my mother that’s how it works.

I love Farley’s expression in the last panel.

If they would cut back on their own portions so they’re not wasting food and throwing it out, that would help them with their issue with Farley.

We put too much on our plates to begin with. Going out to eat means we have leftovers for at least 2 other meals, the portions are huge.

    I can’t believe a drumstick was a “leftover”!

Americans waste to much food. People need to learn how to make just enough food or eat leftovers within three days of first making item. I have had to learn how to cook for four, to three to now just for two people. It can be done. Frozen vegetables help, as do cutting recipes or freezing jar sauces right when jar is opened. Small steps can help. We also compost the vegetable and fruit scraps.

There was a similar strip where everyone was full, and Elly brings up “the starving Armenians”. John responds how forcing themselves to be gluttonous is unhealthy. The last panel shows Elly stuffing herself and saying “I am eating for millions”.

It’s amazing to me how many people take such pleasure in sucking the joy out of a comic.

Our German shepherd has lost a lot of appetite in the years since she was diagnosed by an immune disorder that attacks her joints. I think the medicine to treat it is largely responsible. She only occasionally eats dry or canned dog food but she rarely turns down vegetables – carrots, broccoli, green beans, yams….

It was found that people over estimated somethings and underestimated others. We tend to under estimate risk an how much we can really eat.

Erma Bombeck talking about the food her kids left on their plates. “If I eat it, I’m a bimbo for going off my diet. If I throw it away, I’m a bad wife for being wasteful.”

Elly isn’t fat but it is ironic that she is still stuffing her face right after having finished dinner.
