We are too strong as a people for Buttercup to permanently break us apart, but the turmoil will be a long time subsiding. He will be remembered but never revered. To quote Marc Anthony (Julius Caesar_, Shakespeare, c. 1599) This is a slight, unmeritable man, . . .-
There are many things that we could not understand as we evolved that were eventually explained by those curious enough to investigate and make to tools (microscopes, telescopes, etc) to investigate the things we could not discern directly with our senses. Others, less curious, were content with ancient superstitious/religious/spiritual explanations of how and thing area as they using mysticism, gods, and “strong” leaders to explain the unknowns. We now have a generational/educational divide that is exacerbated by a disproportionate number of the older less educated being elected by an always exuberant older/less-educated cohort frightened by what will happen if they become a minority. The resident has promised to save them by preventing change and they believe him.
“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.” “The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.” “The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master—that’s all." LEWIS CARROLL (Charles L. Dodgson), Through the Looking-Glass, chapter 6, p. 205 (1934). First published in 1872.
