I was part of a robotics class and our maze robot was programmed to have a sensor to detect the dead ends rather than slamming into them every time. That just seems much simpler to me and would take less time to watch. But I guess it doesn’t really matter, either way makes for a good learning tool.
It only works for “simply connected” networks. Once you put short circuits through the maze, making a complexly connected network. Eventually, you have to allow for left turn corrections. Incidentally, it also works with auto-left turns and right turn corrections.
I remember Batman, as portrayed by Adam West in the old TV show, had a method for escaping a maze; a pattern of left and right that allowed him and Robin to escape.
