Only those of a certain age remember what a sweater girl was.

I, of course, am too young.

In panel 2, Janice looks as if she’s sagging a bit in the mirror image.

Judy Garland: Bob, what is it you men find so fascinating about sweater girls?

Bob Hope: I don’t know, Judy. There’s a mystery I’d like to unravel!

I believe Hope did this routine with a number of glamorous female guests back in the forties. (But I doubt that Garland herself was ever referred to as a sweater girl except in the setup for this bit.)

Do they only own mock turtleneck sweaters? I notice Arlo is never concerned how he looks for Janis. Or at least very rarely.

Sweaters are a favorite of mine too. It’s the season for eating a whole bunch of things we probably shouldn’t.

I’ve considered whether or not we’re more related to creatures that hibernate than we think. To do so they must consume as much food as possible to bulk up for the long winter ahead. Sound familiar?

That’s the way to appeal to a young demographic, with slang from the ’30s.

That baggy sweatshirt makes it look like you’ve put on pounds, Janis. My wife had the same problem. She’s lost weight and was wearing pants that fell down. Took me a while to catch on but finally did and offered to take her out and bought her some slimmer winter clothes.

Lana Turner in “They Won’t Forget (1937)” was the first sweater girl. Just search for ‘Lana Turner Sweater Walk’ on YouTube to see what all the fuss was about. Few actresses had a more memorable first role!

I love wearing my sweatshirts. I have turned into an “old lady” and sometimes even need to wear in the summer.

But this year is a problem. When we go out (which is not that often) we wear masks. If we go in to eat (at Wendys – where we ate lunch every day before the pandemic plus Saturday dinner and husband was suffering from withdrawal so going once, maybe twice a week) we have to take off our masks to eat. Hanging them from an ear or pushing under our chins does not work. So we have been putting them in shirt pocket (in my case tee shirts from back when they came with pockets). First chilly day we went in I was trying to put my mask in my pocket, had to lift my sweatshirt high enough to get to the pocket- and again when we went home. So I have to wear my lighter weight, zipper sweatshirts when going out.

(Of course husband is happy over this as he is trying to convince me to buy new zipper sweatshirts which are heavier weight than mine – he loves to come up with reasons I need to buy clothing items as he buys often and I don’t unless something goes bad and he feels bad that I don’t spend – waste – money buying more clothing than I have.)
