Macron is tiptoeing around something Putin doesn’t care about. Putin doesn’t care about an off ramp or saving face. If he wanted an off ramp, he would have found one already.
Macron tried to engage Trump in diplomacy. He had nothing to gain politically, Trump being hated in France. He believes in diplomacy, talking to everybody including your enemy. The role of a mid size power trying to bring the big guys to their senses. BTW, a former government of France, more to the right than Macron, told you guys not to attack Irak. BTW #2: many French believe that the humiliation of Germany after WWI is the reason for the militarization of the country leading to WW2.

Perhaps President Macron would like to offer up the French Riviera to Russia in exchange for them dropping their claims on Ukraine.
