Reagan made it a good time economy by putting it on a credit card. If Republicans had stayed true to their roots, they would be the first ones to raise taxes- for the purpose of balancing the budget. They use to see themselves as the watchdogs of balanced budgets and believed if taxes were high enough then the general public would call for reduced spending on their own.
