I remember going to one of the museum’s when on vacation with my parents. It had two rooms, one was full of all kinds of stuffed animals and the other was full of stuffed birds. I was in shock and ran out of the place screaming and crying. I couldn’t understand how someone could kill one of God’s perfect creatures and charge people money to see them! I never went to another museum like that ever again!
Anytime there is a bug on my bus, all of the kids scream, and I have to stop the bus, and squish the bug. I don’t keep them, but if I did, I would give them to Calvin. I have a kid just like him on my bus.
Who says Suzie’s a nerd? She’s a well-balanced kid who takes responsibility, enjoys school, enjoys her classmates, enjoys her teachers… in other words, someone Calvin should be learning from.
Calvin could teach her much too if he had her moral center, which is far from impossible for him.
Bill Watterson deliberately made Calvin into someone who did many things he himself would never approve of. Keep that firmly in mind before you take Calvin’s side.
Oh Calvin, you wouldn’t like Susie’s girly collection of bugs. She doesn’t have the really neat bugs a guy like you would collect. Tell the teacher a pterodactyl ate them.
Don’t give up Calvin! There’s always a way keep thinking. Learning to deal with problems that seem hopeless to everyone else will take you a lot farther in life than this simple assignment was meant to.You are always going to be surrounded by those who say you CAN’T. Keep believing you can and you will figure out how.
Calvin, check the windshield and front grill on the bus, or stick your head out the window gritting your teeth, just don’t swallow any that stick to teeth.
She doesn’t love him enough to part with her bugs? He’ll share his nauseating lunch with her if she’ll give him half.
They don’t beat each other up? All those snowball fights don’t tickle. I’ve seen the brutish side of Susie plenty of times. She is always walloping Calvin one way or another. That makes Susie a bully. She may have a few wallopings coming to her yet.
Isn’t she just Miss Goody-2-Shoes. I was more like Calvin – I usually forgot any assignment I had a month to do. Who gives 6 year olds a month-long assignment anyway?
I think the scenario is perfectly normal - especially for a 6 year old, and especially especially for the times.
Remember, all these were drawn nearly a generation ago. This was before parents got monthly syllabi, daily status reports, e-mail blasts, online class videos, etc. In the 1980s kids would get an assignment and the parents would find out at report-card time (if ever) what it was. Or, if the kid asked for help, or the parent had learned that their kid needed something closer to daily homework supervision.
I get the same reaction to the commenters who said last week that Calvin’s parents are to blame for his not having done a bug collection that I get when people say that kids can’t play ball or put together a Double-Dutch team or learn how to build a model unless the parents organize adult-led teams and classes for them.
Never put off til the last minute, that which can purchased on assignment day. Wall St., Madison Ave., etc. many opportunities await Calvin. That is what he is training for.

Beating Suzie up is just not in Calvin’s nature. He’ll take advantage of her if he can, but he won’t hit her.
mrslukeskywalker almost 14 years ago
I know. It was just a joke.
Jeez! That IS what we’re supposed to do here. Joke around.
I didn’t say do as you always do. I said do as 6 year olds do, which… they do.
Maybe you can focus on coming up with your own comment instead of nitpicking mine.
1148559 almost 14 years ago
Maybe 6 year old bullies do, but not all 6 year-olds are bullies… and Calvin is definitely not a bully.
