It’s a Sunday, which are drawn up earlier then dailies. So Jim may have not even thought about Jon going on vacation sans Garfield when he made this strip.
I genuinely like how Garfield has absolutely no interest in hurting mice, and at times seems even affectionate towards them (though of course he understands the importance of maintaining an image as well). Garfield contains multitudes.
