Now see, the post-Harry Potter generation understands that you need your magic wand to make this work.

Magic is fine…. but it is much better to have an older sister who you pay to do your homework. That way you have time for the more important things in life…. like fishing, walking in the woods, pondering the mystery of clouds, discussing the meaning of life with Hobbes….

How does flipping the pages of the book determine whether the homework is done, or is Calvin speedreading?

It’s probably easier to just learn his school work than to try to learn magic.

You know, Calvin, that you could easily do your homework, or spend twice as much effort and time reading up on spells and witchcraft to learn how to make the homework do itself. Which one will you choose? Any bets?

    @ Richard S Russell said …

“It’s not a VERBAL spell, it’s a WRITTEN spell, and you have to get it down just right in order for it to work.”

Strangely the spell varies every day, and has a remarkable relationship to the assignment at hand.

    Go figure …

@dahawk,You’re ‘baiting’ me, aren’t you? (The fishing comments were several days ago.) ‘To whom am I talking?’I assume you are referring to my two comments that were questions. They were mostly rhetorical, and were not directly related to anything said here today except in the comic itself, but anyone is welcome to respond to them.

I had homework in elementray school (and it was a public school). In first grade (Calvin’s age) we had number and counting exercises and reading.Second grade was mostly reading, spelling, and arithmetic (addition and subtraction)In fourth grade we had to memorize poetry — not kids’ rhymes but Longfellw, Keats, and so on — It tought me to hate poetry (Later, thanks to a good teacher in 11th grade, I learned the beauty of poetry). We also had spelling bees which were humiliating. It seemed that most of the other students got words like “daisy” and “banana” and I usually got words like “rhizomateous” and “paraphernalia.” I did not enjoy fourth grade.

My homework was rarely on paper. However, soon as I got home, I had to search a 40-acre woods/pasture for the milk cow and milk her before supper. Next morning, milk her again before turning her back out into the pasture. Before school. This finally ended one day when dad and I were cultivating corn, and quit early to do the chores. Then he said, here we are neglecting hundreds of dollars worth of corn for 30c worth of milk! The cow was sold shortly after. (how many kids these days would know how to milk a cow?)
