No – you are not allowed to remove them. The solution is to make four boxes that only touch at the corners. Move the top row second-from-left down to the bottom row and move the bottom row second-from-right so it finishes the three-sded box made in the previous move. I tried typing the diagram here but it doesn’t display properly.

Just remove the ones at the bottom left.
