I toss the ball with the cat. She never gets tired of it. She never moves.

We had a cat that taught us to play catch. He loved to fetch little butterscotch candies that had little cellophane “handles” which he used to carry the candy in his mouth.

This also works with cats, but you need to use a ball of yarn instead.

it’s nice to see a caveman and his wolf share quality time together. you just don’t see that happening today.

I have two small dogs in my clinic. Many times they are the best medicine for my patients. They both got 1099 s for their work this year.

Skulker — Amen to the butterscotch. I’m having a Werther’s Original in honor of you and your cat. My dog is ignoring me.

I find an occasional bad mood therapeutic and refreshing. I yell at the TV, kick offending pieces of furniture, bemoan the state of the world, and wallow in self pity. Then the reality of how lucky I am seeps back in, and I’m back to my usual happy-go-lucky, moderately grumpy self.

As for animals, I’m a dog guy, but the cheapest great entertainment you can have is two [but not one] kittens.

There are times when I thought that “the new guys” could never fill Johnny’s shoes. This is one of those strips that tell me they are doing just fine. Lovely.

I love today’s strip, and I love that dogs do this, but there’s a downside.

One time when I was a kid, my mom and dad were driving out to New York state to pick up my siblings and me, who had spent a couple of weeks with cousins. They were bringing Maggie, the Best Dog who Ever Was (as certified by experts worldwide), with them.

It was a two-day drive, and my parents hadn’t driven it before, and somewhere in the upstate hills they got lost. They were really stressed, and they had the roadmap spread out between them, and Maggie kept trying to climb up from the back seat to comfort them. There’s a time and a place, m’dear. :-)

I also remember a Richard Pryor routine (it’s in one of his movies) where he had a pet monkey that died. The Doberman Pinscher next door, who’d barked ferociously at him every day, saw Pryor sitting on his back porch crying. The dog jumped over the fence, put his head on his (Pryor’s) knee and looked up at him with big brown eyes.

“What’s the matter, Rich?”“My monkey died!”“Oh, I’m so sorry. I was gonna eat him, too. But you know, Rich, pets don’t live forever. You love them while they’re here, and then you say goodbye, but you know that you loved them, and you know that they knew you did.”“Thanks, that helps a lot. I’m feeling better already.”“Glad to help.” Andas the dog jumps back over the fence into his own yard he looks back and says “You know I’m gonna be chasin’ your ass again tomorrow, right?”

One of the worse cries I ever had was over a beloved dog of many years. It’s funny how they can get into your heart.
