Lennie is not quite old enough to have been much involved in the social and political events of the 1960’s. And that explains but doesn’t forgive the statement that “most everybody was capable of ignoring” those things. The changes brought about were specifically on account of us NOT ignoring them, often to our cost. Things did not just change themselves. Of course, when the 70’s is the decade of your youth, there’s not much to talk about.
