Well, the comic is about real home life. And in real life, politics have gotten awfully scary. Art draws from life, and I applaud Jan for bringing real life issues into her comic’s world, instead of just ignoring them. One of the things I like about Stone Soup is that it doesn’t shy away from the grittiness of life (sometimes babies stink, and sometimes kids are bratty, and sometimes millionaires compromise our political process). Politics are part of life, so they’re fair game for a comic portraying a family existing in the world. If that annoys you, then maybe you should stick to Cathy, Blondie, and Dennis the Menace.

Well, first of all, you’re not impressing anybody by walking away, and if you stay, you just MIGHT learn something. (Heaven forbid!)

Thank you for having the courage to put this all out. Not only don’t most folks know who Rove, Koch Bros, etc.are, but they also have no clue about what’s really going on behind the “sound bites”.

And then there’s Ann Romney’s viewpoint on equal pay for equal work: “Why should women be paid equal to men? Men have been in the working world a lot longer and deserve to be paid at a higher rate. Heck, I’m a working mom and I’m not paid a dime. I depend on my husband to provide for me and my family, as should most women… and if a woman does work, she should be happy just to be out there in the working world and quit complaining that she’s not making as much as her male counterparts. I mean really, all this wanting to be equal nonsense is going to be detrimental to the future of women everywhere. Who’s going to want to hire a woman, or for that matter, even marry a woman who thinks she is the same, if not better than a man at any job. It’s almost laughable. C’mon now ladies, are you with me on this?”

And I suppose David Axelrod, Joe Biden, and George Soros are just public-spirited citizens…

Let’s mention Corzine, Rezko, & Soros, as well as big labor unions as huge contributors to the process. Especially for Democrats. Oh, 1 is in jail, 1 is under investigation for fraud, & 1 was punished for collapsing a country’s currency. Don’t get involved in politics too much, Jan, unless you want to get out of the business. Conservatives pay for websites. We are not freeloaders.

How about Saul Alinsky – BIG influence with the President. As equally as vile as any others named.

This WAS my favorite comic, have been completely turned off. No mention of Soros, Axelrod, or the misery of the past 3 years

Like the Democrats have no powerful people exerting influence! I get enough lopsided commentary on the cable news channels, I don’t need it in my comics. If you’re going to get political, how about some balance? Better yet, don’t get political!

Did MSNBC buy Stone Soup? This is crazy, one-sided pontificating. It’s also old news—-Bush is gone, and turns out he was WAYYYY better than Obummer. If the Stone Soup Comic Strip wants to stay in the current decade they should at least mention that Obama has his own Karl Rove (David Axelrod), his own Dick Cheney (Rahm Emanuel), and the BIGGEST hater of our country, other than Obama himself, George Soros.

For reality shows as DWTS, not too many CEO and Dick Chaney would go on those shows. I think is funny SS mentions DWTS. My favorite show)

Politics for some of us is a matter of surviving or not due to this failed experiment in inexperience. AND IT’S NOT FUNNY!

I keep up on politics but don’t care to read about it in my comic strips. This writer has lost me as a reader.

Call me a moderate. I agree with Jan’s position, but it’s disruptive to the narrative flow to be naming names. I don’t think it’s “inappropriate”, but it’s jarring.

Still, I wonder how many Right-side commentators have the same reaction when Glenn McCoy’s editorial-cartoon sentiments make their occasional appearances in “The Duplex” or “The Flying McCoys.”

Let’s include James Johnson, Barney Frank & Chris Dodd to the mix as well.

In the newspaper format comic strips as a medium are absolutely moribund. The comic page is dominated by comics were the original artist has either long retired or kicked off the mortal coil. Its sort of hard to find current relevance in a comic with a copyright date from the Johnson administration.This comic has drawn quite a reaction in the last few days. With mentioning politics directly. Yet this CS has been indirectly political all along. The Grandmother building houses in Haiti, a class of Elementary School students taking over the new faculty of the Athletic Dept. at the State University for example. Getting your knickers in a twist, threatening to cancel a subscription, being uncivil might work with local newspaper editors, here it just serves makes one look rather foolish.

The Supreme Court ruled that corporations have the same rights to make political donations as individuals, and the Left went ballistic. So now Nancy Pelosi is suggesting that we amend the Constitution to take First Amendment rights away from corporations. Beware of anyone who wants to change the Constitution to REDUCE anyone’s rights.

Occasional commentary on the state of the world is one thing, but I like to know when I’m turning to the editorial comics. I don’t read the regular comics for daily, personal, biting political commentary. I’ve deleted the comic till this season has passed.

Why would you alienate half your potential audience???? One more liberal rant Jan and you can kiss me goodbye.

I can’t imagine why, either. After all, two mothers, struggling to raise kids, busting their humps to pay the bills and make a living… not able to afford things like hedge funds, and probably don’t even have 401Ks or anything like that. Yeah, why shouldn’t they complain about someone or some side that wants to get a fair – a truly fair – break for everyone, and not just the blue-chip stockholders?

Showing characters talking about stuff they have no clue about is just DUMB.

My intrest in this otherwise funny comic is starting to slide…

Corporations aren’t people and denying them rights in no way limits the legitimate political expression of the people who make up the corporation. They still have increased access to the political process based on connections within business that non-corporate citizens typically do not.

Bravo Jan! You are fostering political discussion and awareness.

People who have an audience – actors, singers, & comic strip authors – should keep their political opinions to themselves, because no matter what side they take, they alienate half their audience.Considering how hard it is to be successful in these fields, that seems to me to be a high price to pay for stating your opinion. If you feel so strongly about politics, drop the strip & run for office.

Thanks for bringing their names up. I was about to. I guess folks who get their news from MSNBC, late night comedians, as if that’s news, Huffington, etc haven’t heard about Soros, Axlerod, et al.

Pampam – are you for real?? What would happen to you and your children if your husband is unable to work, dies, or decides he doesn’t want to be married any longer? It does happen you know.

I just saw todays “comic” and wanted to cry. I’m 73 years old and was born patriotic. I’ve always voted,supported whoever was elected and tried to stay abreast of what’s going on. Let me say that the last 4 years have been scarier then when I was a teenager and wanted my Dad to build a fallout shelter. To me the scariest part is the fact that we are so divided as a people. What is happening here and how can we solve it. We need to love one another & get back to our basics.

One thing that nobody seems to have noticed is how mild Jan Eliot’s criticism is. It’s just a hair’s breadth away from being at the political centre. If she really laid it on with a trowel, then I could see a reason for all these frothings at the mouth.

As it is, I think you Americans are all getting upset over nothing.

Ms. Eliot – I know this doesn’t fit in with your Daily KOS worldview, but Bush & Cheney left the White House almost FOUR YEARS AGO. They don’t control the levers of power anymore. They’re history. You should be worried (and writing) about the incompetent currently in the White House, and the puppet masters who pull his strings (Axelrod, Soros, etc.).

I know you’re from the People’s Republic of Eugene but if I want politics I’ll read the op-ed page in the Red Guard.

I am getting tired of this comic strip including politics. How much to the cartoonists who go on and on about politics actually study it anyway? Do they get information from varying sources with varying opinions? Have they had time to check out all the facts? Besides which, I read Stone Soup to read something that is hopefully funny. If I want politics, I’ll read the news.

Unfortunately that is true. People don’t know! We have to help spread the word that our democracy is being sold to the highest bidder. Sold out because power and the love of money makes for the greedy twitch. Too many people watch faux nooz and think it is real news. If we want to stay a democracy it is important to convince people that the truth is, fox is pushing the game plan of the GOP and nothing there is without a spin towards Right wing propaganda.
