I’m going camping next week for 8 days. The site is right beside a large lake and the next closest site is over 100’ away. The state designed these sites well and it’s shrouded in trees but still has a view of the water. No electric, and you have to get water from the shower/restroom station, but at night, you can hear frogs, night birds, and when the moon doesn’t dominate the sky, you can see the Milky Way.There are other sites with water and/or electric, even cabins in other parts of the park.Every few years, there’s an effort to turn this park into waterfront homes. As it’s a state park, it is more vulnerable to the whims of the majority party in office.A similar effort is being made to permit offshore drilling on the Virginia coastline. For decades, my family has enjoyed watching boats, ships, dolphins, and whales migrate a long the shore from Chincoteague, to Virginia Beach, to Back Bay Wildlife refuge on the North Carolina/Virginia line. There are so many viable ways to create ‘energy’ from wind, tides, sun, algae, other plants, and even hydrogen gas. All it takes is an initial investment to set the infrastructure in place, and after that initial expense, the cost would drop drastically and, if the studies I’ve read, and documentaries I’ve seen, are correct, would be well below what we are paying now.Everyone wants to protect their industries and their jobs, but why can’t they use their industry and job to start adjusting and adapting to these newer, safer, and more sustainable technologies? The future is coming, how are we preparing for it?Respectfully,C.
