My grandpa was a hero in the war, too, albeit a different kind. A Japanese family that he knew were taken to Minodoka to cool their heels for a while and they agreed to let Grandpa move Grandma and my mom into their home and run their nursery (making mortgage and other payments through the business proceeds). This was not a popular thing in 1943. When the Nojis returned, Grandpa and Grandma moved out and back into a rental house while Mom went off to college. A lot of people lost their homes and businesses simply because they were Japanese. The war HAD to be fought, but I’m so proud of Grandpa (an immigrant from France himself) for remembering the principles our soldiers were fighting for are what make America “America.”
