Meditations of Thorax Freedom: noun, archaic; the original definition of which is subject to dispute. In modern usage, its meaning can be derived only through a head count: When lives are put on the line in distant lands for an ambiguous cause, the standard explanation is that they are protecting freedom. The greater the ambiguity, the greater the number of lives - until freedom can be defined only through conscription.
