Gran says, "Noel Coward came off with his pianist, then my name was announced again. As soon as the crowd heard it, about 1,300 voices rose in clamrous greeting, and I walked out only to hear the uproar rise like a wave and crash over the stage." Gran says, "At that point, it hit me full force what kind of song I was about to impose on this unprepared audience. ...A quiet, French art song by a composer very likely none of them knew. My heart pounded so hard that I didn't think I could sing a sustained note." Gran says, "So I spoke to them about the song, about occupied France... and I hid my gathering terror."
