Mark says, "Maxine could have been Seth's grandmother, except that she was a wiry little woman half his grandma's weight, with a tight chignon and an expression as if she were perpetually sucking on an unripe persimmon." Mark says, "But there are some things a helpless romantic like Seth can't get over... a sound, a look in the eyes... things that catapult him past the most sacrosanct of boundaries. In Maxine's case it was her oboe playing. Seth's heart was stirred, and he was in love." Edda says, "I guess I don't possess any qualities that would stir Seth." Mark says, "Nope, you don't have to fret about that. You're completely unprovocative." Edda says, "How awfully comforting."
