Katy; Mom, what kind of dog is gumbo? Laura; They're guessing a Shepherd/ Retriever mix. Katy; How come it's a guess. Laura; Well, Gumbo's first owner left her on the street. Katy; All alone? Laura; Yep. Gumbo's lucky we found her. Katy; And those owners are lucky I haven't found them.

I was given (more, it was forced on me) a 6 week old kitten. I was living on a shoe string budget, and barely able to feed myself. After a month, I realized, I couldn’t afford new litter, or more food for the cat… so in tears, I walked a kilometer to the nearby vet, talked to the owner, and explained my situation, they lent me a travel case, and I brought “Spazzy” as I called her, to them, and apologized. The vet looked at me, hugged me and said “you did the right thing. If you can’t afford to feed her, she deserves better. I’ll get rid of her fleas, give her her shots, and she’ll have a home with my family.” I wasn’t ready to look after another living creature at that time. (I was 19.)

It’s horrible when pets are abandoned or abused by their owners; the first cat my family ever owned actually adopted us when I was in fourth grade, and he was with us for about three to four years before he ran away. I hope that he is in kitty heaven now.

And what are you going to do when you find them Katy?

That is how we got our dog. The previous owner dumped him out in a snow storm even. My wife brought him home, a little 12# mix terrier .Great little guy. That was 2 years in Jan.

That’s how I have had my pets. All but one was a rescue. We got our Susie, yellow lab at a pet store and she was such a delight! And what do you do when you find two little kittens under a tree in your backyard whose eyes weren’t even open yet? You call your vet, ask him what to do, and bottle feed them, take care of them, get them to go to the bathroom until they can do it on their own, and then you end up with 2 of the most adoring, fun loving, affectionate cats you could ever ask for! They went in for their one year shots and my vet was amazed. He said they looked nothing like the first time we brought these kittens to him, and frankly didn’t think they would make it, and told me so. He said yesterday, “You and your son DONE GOOD!”
