Adam: Hey, Katy? Katy, you should make a birthday card for grandma. Katy: Ok! Adam: I'm glad you included your last name. She may have been confused otherwise. Dear Gradma, I hope you have a nice birthday. I had peanut butter for lunch. What is your favorite color? Have you ever seen a unicorn? Clayton saw a bad word at dinner. How is the candy drawer at your house? Can I come over soon? Did you get any good birthday gifts? I have six dollars in my bank. Did my dad get good grades when he was my age? I love you. Katy Newman, your granddaughter.

Whatever else Katy is, she’s thorough.

And grandmom would carry that card in her purse for weeks and chuckle every time she read it… which would be twice a day, at least.

I loved things like that when my kids were that age. And if my grandson ever did something like that I would’ve definitely kept it.

My mother always writes her first and last name on cards to me. It makes us laugh. She signs it “Love, mom, Liduina Bettencourt” Okay, how many moms do I have and how many people named Liduina do I know???? LOL

Sounds like something Buddy the Elf would write!
“Wow, you’re fast. I’m glad I caught up to you. I waited 5 hours for you. Why is your coat so big? So, good news – I saw a dog today. Have you seen a dog? You probably have. How was school? Was it fun? Did you get a lot of homework? Huh? Do you have any friends? Do you have a best friend? Does he have a big coat, too?… "

I’ve been told that the best way to write a letter was to do it as if you were there having a conversation with the person. In that regard, Katie’s letter is a very good example.

It is the kind of mistake a child would make – cute – so I read it as grades and smiled wryly!

This letter put a tear in my eye, really! I remembered the letters my children sent to us when they went to camp. BTW, I’ve kept them all. Also, when we went away on business trips, and our children were at their grandparents’, my oldest daughter kept a journal about their daily happenings, for us to read when we came back, and I’ve kept that too.
