Laura: You've invented coffee underpants? Adam: I have. Laura: Can you at least call them underwear? Adam: Why? Laura: There's something about the word "underpants." I just... Don't like it. Adam: Like "balm" and "curd." Laura: You swore never to speak those words again. Adam: Sorry. I'll put a dollar in the balm and curd jar.

It seems there are a number of words that just bother people despite their ordinary meaning. One word that apparently has this problem is “moist” (also called out by another commenter). I don’t get curd and balm though – they sound really ordinary.

Night-Gaunt49 – you must have been heard yesterday about your underwear vs. underpants preference. There’s words I really like but I can’t think of any that bother me.

I have the same problem with the word “whoha”, largely because it congers up memories of my mother yelling at my sisters about keeping theirs clean, but a lot of people use it as a generic word, like in the phrase “Don’t give a who-ha.”

At least “curd” sounds very close to a cuss word. “Balm”…is simply a four-letter word in the literal sense, but I don’t question other people’s audio tastes any more than their gustatory tastes.

Reminds me of the Monty Python skit about “tinny” words.
