I was a City kid and we lived on a street between the streets that ran up a steep hill. We would drag our sleds several blocks up the hill and slide down the middle of the less busy of the two streets. Since this was way before 4 wheel or all wheel drive, most traffic was on the other street so it was reasonably safe. Got exciting when someone did try to drive on it tho.
We used the footpath thru the woods behind my friend’s house after we moved to NH. It was just wide enough for Flexible Flyers to be able to pass if the riders were skinny, but you had to know where the tree roots were so as not to become airborne.
In high school, I knew there were dangerous runs, so I thought the signs “Long Hair – Dangerous” at the bottom of the tow ropes were an early warning. I poled and shuffled my way to the third one before I realized it was the rope they were warning me about.
I grew up in London, Ontario. Our most notorious hill was “Hospital Hill” … because it was a near 40 degree angle, and it was across the street from the Emergency Department. LOL
