Just what is wrong with “very few long-term relationships”? For reasons I’ve never understood (and no one ever seems able to explain), those who have “few friends” are looked upon with suspicion — better off than those with no friends at all, no doubt, but only by a hair’s breadth. It’s as if you’re expected to meet some arbitrary mandatory minimum when it comes to friendship, or else something must be wrong with you. But there are those for whom a few is more than enough. Indeed, that’s the most they can handle. And if you can keep those few for life, you have all you need.
