Killing with kindness.
Grandma is making small talk, waiting for Lawrence Welk to come on!
I think it’s great that Grandma “believes”… even though we’re sure she’s playing along.
Some people want to make her out as harsh or uncaring…. but she didn’t have to take in her granddaughter, and work hard to support her.
With her low wages she’d be better off without a young girl to feed and clothe
But she loves Agnes, watches over her and tries to keep her on a good path.
Some of the discipline no doubt comes from trying to rein in Agnes’ flights of fancy…
and keep her from following in whatever footsteps must have led her parents astray.
As for Lawrence Welk…. she’d have a long wait, since he’s been dead for 20 years.
Anyway, a woman with a full time job and a ten year old granddaughter isn’t likely to be 92!
She’s rather work-worn and tattered…. but I don’t think she’s meant to be as old as she looks.
We’ve seen hints in this strip over the years about her own somewhat wild past…
which she tries to hide from Agnes, preferring to set a solid, church-going,example.
But it involved rock bands, not granny music!
Remember….. a lot of today’s grannies were teens in the 60’s and 70’s, and are still rock fans anyway.
I think, with Agnes’ Grandma, it was KISS…. anybody remember?
It was nice of Grandma to seem interested in Agnes’ latest project. It has to be difficult to show interest in some of the things Agnes comes up with.
Ants and hot water are a poor mix – if you are an ant.
It’s a spiffy trailer court indeed that has a sidewalk.
Actually, it’s very hard to drown ants. Even ones that appear to have been drowned can often be revived by just putting them out in the sun.
If ’e’s resting, I’ll wake him up. "’ELLO MR. ANT! I’ve got a lovely sugar lump for you’
