“Sacrilege!” was my first reaction. Then it occurred to me that this Popeye exists in an alternate universe (the universe of Andertoons), so it’s okay if he wants to eat kale. (It also explains this Popeye’s use of proper English.)
In the delightful Robin Williams Popeye movie (1980), he wanted carrots — didn’t get to spinach until later in the film. So there’s some precedent for him eating other things besides spinach.
