“Coppers” would’ve been funnier than “police.” Nowadays Andy might as well be an American TV news anchor, with all the flavor taken out of his accent and phraseology.
Another term was “Bobbies” after Sir Robert Peel who formed the Metropolitan Police Force in 1829. Also, particularly, in the North of Ireland, they were called Peelers.
In the Republic of Ireland the police are called Garda Síochána na hÉireann, commonly called Gardaí which means Guardians. In both the U.K. and Ireland, in the old days, police were recruited more for their brawn than brains. The minimum height was 5’10" ( the average height was no more than 5’6’’ – 5’8" in those days ). Big strapping “country lads” were actively sought because they were assumed to be able to physically handle the local drunks and toughs. Since they were unarmed, except for a truncheon, they were expected to be handy with their fists.Andy looks small when confronted with one of these big Bobbies.

Brits don’t call Cops Coppers, via Hollywood. At least in fact; not sure about the Truth. and I’ll apologize to the entire U.K. if i misuse that term somehow; using It inclusive of Andy Capp. But i was quite surprised to find Andy’s been living with a non-coin type Copper!
/a>She might be a Flatfoot, tho, with all the heavy-lifting she does. And Andy’s a Big Appendage.
While Wikipedia defines the origin of cop as an acronym for Constable On Patrol, I am more inclined to believe that it’s origin came from the British slag for grab, cop – as in cop a feel or cop a joint ( in modern parlance ). Because the police grabbed or copped the criminals, they were the coppers. The word “cop” has other meanings as well, all connected to “catch” or “snatch”:
To “cop out” meaning to withdraw or escape, or to evade responsibilityTo “cop it” meaning to be punished or get caughtTo “cop a plea” is to try to catch a lesser punishment by admitting to a lesser crime“A fair cop” means to be caught in the act.
I have no idea ( and neither does anyone else, to my knowledge ) of the origin of the word Fuzz for the police !

This is not the first time that Andy’s trip to the hospital is not what it seems…
Sometimes, though, he’s perfectly sincere…
And sometimes he shows his soft side by planning in advance…
