There is another saying I think StoicLion was referring to—“the grass is greener over the septic tank”. I believe it was also the title of a book by the late Erma Bombeck, who once wrote a newspaper column.

Erma Bombeck’s column was a generally light-hearted view of parenthood and suburban living. Her book, “The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank” was a play on the old adage. Anyone living in a town with no city sewers knows (or knew, at the time the book was published) that this was one of the great suburban truths. My parents front lawn got too much sun and had very little shade. The only place the grass was consistently green was over the septic tank leech field. I guess Erma’s twist has become more commonly known than the original. It has certainly gotten more laughs over the years.
