When I was a child (some people say that I’m still one) there was the “grumpy” old man that every neighborhood seems have (sometimes there it could be a lady_ who didn’t want us playing on the sidewalk in front of his yard. His explanation was: “This tree might fall and hurt you babies.”

If it’s an oak he really doesn’t have to much to worry about. They are fairly strong trees. My parents yard a has 3 of the probably close to 100years old with one that has been leaning at a 45 degree angle over a hill since I was a child.

I’m worried about the trees across the street falling on our house. So far, it’s just been branches breaking the high-voltage wires on the utility poles.

Old people, Arlo? You mean some old people, right? Or maybe other old people? Cause I’ve got other things to worry about.

She either called you an old man or immature. I wonder which caused that shocked stare?

This storyline hits too close to home for comfort. I have a lovely post oak outside my living room window that I adore. But I’ve noticed it’s grown with a slight leaning in the direction of my house, because it gets all its sun from that direction. So, like Arlo, I’m torn between my love for that tree and my fear of where it might fall, if it does.

Why is it that when a guy makes a stupid statement to his wife he gets the couch, when she does it, she is still sleeping in the bed?

That, Arlo, is a very young oak tree. Assuming it’s healthy, anything that would cause it to fall would take out your house, anyway.

This is so true. In the past few years old people in my neighborhood have cut down four nice old trees that used shade the street in the summer. Only one of those trees actually needed to be cut down. I asked one of them why he was having the tree cut down. He said “Because I hate trees”.

My question is…why is he so worried about the tree falling? It is only 20 years old. No big deal. Lightening hit it? Extremely rare. I am sure there are higher things nearby that will be more likely to be hit. There are most likely houses taller than his house, and more likely to be hit.
