I have never been able to understand hot tubs. Why you would get naked, go outside when it’s cold and sit in hot water? My neighbors installed one and I think they have used it 2 or 3 times in the past ten years.
Notice that the hot tub moved several feet from panels 1 and 2 to it’s location in panel 3… that said, you CAN put up a small panel or decorative divider around the hot tub to shield it from nosy neighbors… ;-)
We have one, and don’t have a fenced in yard. The trick is to go out around 10:30 at night. I get in (naked of course) and do not turn on the lights in the tub. Nothing like looking at up at the stars, and having your aches and pains gone for awhile. Although we don’t use it as often as we did when it was new (10 yrs ago), we still enjoy it. I must admit that we have it winterized after Thanksgiving, as we live outside of Chicago and it get’s too cold to think about going out in Dec. – March.
Sitting in reused, chemically treated, people soup has never appealed. But it rarely gets freezing cold here, and I have played around with the idea of a big outdoor shower, good for both summer and winter. “Let’s make some steam.”
I wouldn’t have given a nickle for a hot tub…before we moved here, hot tub included. We LOVE it till it died after 10 years; especially in winter with it snowing. We got a fence section to attach to the deck for privacy from neighbors. I sympathize with Arlo and Janice with their neighbor.
I had one until recently at my mountain home 7k feet in the Sequoia National Monument. It was a wood fired hot tub. At night, in the heat of the tub we would look at stars or catch snow flakes in our mouths. When you sit in a tub that is 100 degrees or more you can walk out on the snow with only the bottoms of your feet cold.
A common theme in the comments so far is the concern individuals have for being seen in the nude.
This seems to be somewhat more universal than, and independent of, local laws regarding the freedom to be nude on your own property.
It strikes me as a bit sad that someone gets some kind of thrill in seeing their adult neighbor in the buff. If it was me in the buff, my concern would be more that I’m unintentionally being offensive.
DCBakerEsq reminded me of my training supervisor, who told me how on one rainy summer evening back in the late 1970s he and his wife decided to ‘streak’ around the outside of their house and what a good time that was. Ever since, on rainy but warm summer evenings, I think of them and are tempted. But now we live in a double house, and I don’t think Ed and Verna would approve.

With all of that steam, it’s hard to say whether the neighbor was tantalized or titillated.

Suggest it again after you get a taller fence. They don’t call them privacy fences for nothing.

Well you know Janice, good fences make good neighbors.

I think it’s not a dream, it’s an illustration of their conversation…
Arlo is painting a word picture for Janis, about how great it would be to have a hot tub…
Janis enters the picture, to point out the house next door, and the neighbor, who might be looking out the window.
As is often the case, her pragmatic outlook popped his bubble…
Hence his line in the last panel.Reminds me of “Well, all the other kids have bb guns, and they don’t put their eyes out.”
In many places, including my city, you can’t build a fence taller than 6 feet….
Fine for blocking the neighbors’ back yard…
insufficient for the view from their upstairs windows.
Then you need trellises, roof overhangs, or other means of concealment…
or a lot more brazenness than Janis possesses.

it’s a status thing. if you don’t want your neighbors to see you build a high wall around it.

I bet it’s not just the neighbor she’s worried about.
Drones (especially from Amazon)
low flying aircraft (especially police surveillance helicopters like in Blue Thunder)
Francis Gary Powers
Google Maps
NSA, SVR RF, MSS
Personally I’d be more worried about the advance invasion force from the planet Sunev.

Just have to pick a location that won’t be entertaining the neighbors.
