About noon yesterday I went out to spread some mulch. My wife said that she and our daughter would come out to help. Three hours later I put away the wheelbarrow. They were still in their PJs. That’s how it’s going for me.

I have a machete that I use for branch removal, do wonder what the neighbors think

An unexpected benefit of retirement: I now enjoy yard work.

Before, I hated it. I saw it as a thief of what little free time I had.

Oh, do I know the feeling. I manicured the 100ft lilac hedge that goes across front of our property this summer (right after blooming). Clip out all the dead and broken, shape it all, etc. Awkward too because we have a perennial row right in front of it on the house side. Lilac wood is too hard to use any sort of hedge trimmers on them, so it’s all by hand. Cut, snip, move the ladder, eyeball it, and repeat. Got it all down to about 9’ high and about 8’ wide. Then with the weird weather this year all the lilacs were stressed and were wilting/losing their leaves early, they even had a big article in the paper as to ‘WTF was going on with the lilacs this year’. Hopefully they recover well next spring.

My backyard is essentially a leaf and branch factory.

The little pony tail is not a good look on Arlo. Time for either a visit to the barber or for Janice to practice her hair cutting skills.

I love trimming plants in the yard. Good thing my husband does not like to do that chore.

That’s one way to keep up with the Joneses.

This is the way I figure I will feel about 5 mins into the yard work at my very first home actually owned by me. I will be responsible for all outside maintenance. I did some for the house we rented (1/5 of an acre), so not to hard! We plan on buying 15-20 acres. A bit more work will have to be done. Granted most will be left alone, but I will be working with the state to set up a wildlife and forestry preservation plan to keep out invasive species and re-introduce native species – both flora and fauna – as possible to our area (which we have not figured out exactly yet). We are currently planning on mid-West Virginia, but do have a little leeway.

Vegetation control can be an endless task.
